The Courtyard House | Residence

A linear rectangular south facing plot in an urban residential hub, fits in a three-bedroom house with the epicenter as the courtyard. The challenge was to maximize the filtered day light inside. The foyer, living space, staircase & dining area revolves around the courtyard on the east in ground floor.

The single flight staircase in the west side leads to the first floor with the family living, master bedroom and the third bedroom. The double height courtyard on the east lights the interior space all through the day. The challenge was to reduce the inside temperature on the south side.

As we explore the options to design a shading element on to the south facade, which can act as a skin throughout the year to reduce the interior heat gain and give a unique residential facade element, the waffle structure wall was preferred over louvers, jalis, perforated panels etc., as the wave form designed acts as a shading element throughout the year with the varying sun angles.
