Kolkata Museum Of Modern Art – Point of juncture of streams
Kolkata Museum of Modern Art (KMoMA) will exhibit works of art from the east and the west and also from SAARC nations. The museum will act as a point of juncture to showcase the artworks.
The design was developed while doing a step by step analysis ON-SITE with respect to noise, traffic movement, etc. The site zoning was done based on the analysis and resulted in a basic rectangular zone for the museum building. The lines are stretched from all the parts and the form was arrived with angled wall and levels which makes the spaces more interesting.
DAYLIGHTING ANALYSIS: Based on the study, light wells and strip windows are used to ensure that the maximum daylight available is being used. The light wells were placed based on the daylight factor.
As the design consists of spaces at different levels and a non-regular circulation pattern in the atrium, it was crucial as well as difficult to solve the structure. The structure is fully designed with steel box sections of varying sizes. The structure has been made more stable by using light weight “FOAMED CONCRETE” to cover it up. While exhibiting the property of low water absorption, the material renders good thermal and sound installation, which is quite essential for museum spaces.Based on the sun angle study, the louvers were designed with varying depths from the façade to have maximum shadow all through the season.
The design revolves in levels and a remarkable continuous circulation pattern. The main entry to the museum is from the ground level. A straight flight of stairs invites us into the museum directly to the first level.
The stairs and autowalks gives a whirling effect right from the bottom to the top of the floor with in between landing spaces which connects to the display spaces. They enter the gallery spaces from one level and exits at another. The circulation is designed by splitting the building into two parts. Takes us up till the top floor through the left side and brings down through the right side to the cafeteria in the ground floor.
